10127 User Inspired Design 12 cr, fall
The emphasis in design has increasingly shifted towards solving the questions of what should be designed instead of only dealing with challenges defined in apolished design brief. In User Inspired Design (UID) Module the traditional designerly problem solving and novel approaches to involve users into design decision making are applied to find out and describe emerging practices and design opportunities. UID projects do not aim at proposing feasible designs but propose decision making options and stimuli for a range of different business purposes.
10143 Interactive Prototyping in Design 12 cr, spring (IV period)
The course will begin with a research on given subject. The students will analyze and explain the results, and create a direction for concepts based on the findings. The students will conduct a literary review on relevant topic. Parallel to theoretical work, the course will have practical exercises on programming with C, building small electric circuits and conducting tests. The students will create concepts, and eventually create working prototypes. The course will have rigorousimplementing period at the end of the course. Finally, the prototypes are user tested and results explained in the light of background research. The students write a final report in the form of academic publication.
10157 Designing Services 12 cr, fall (II period)
Newer areas for the application of design thinking and making include supporting human-centred innovation as a strategy, setting ground and supporting various kinds of collaborations beyond the more traditional design fields, designing services being one of them. The topics address transformations in public and private organisations, changes in technology as well as requirements and potentials of open or shared innovation and networking. The focus is on "designing good life culture" through a holistic, human-centred, co-design approach i.e. tha application of design competence and experiential engagement in the emerging and experimental topics in service design. The project-based module is open to students from various fields of art and design and for a limited number of students from other Aalto Disciplines.
