Contents

Global distribution is becoming a mainstream way of organizing software development projects. By global distribution, companies are trying to cut software development costs, to get access to competent labor, and to shorten the time to market for their products. However, to be able to reap the benefits, there are several challenges to overcome.

Building collaborative relationships and collaboration practices within the project team are signs of successful distributed teams. How do the successful software teams accomplish this?

Agile and Lean software development are currently hot trends that are also being applied to globally distributed software develop- ment projects. How can these methods enhance productivity of distributed projects?

Newest research findings on global software engineering will be presented in the seminar by Aalto researchers: Collaboration and communication practices and tools, processes, and trust building.

Capgemini, IBM and Vaisala will present their experiences and solutions on how to build successful cooperation in globally distributed software development projects. They will also dis- cuss their views on the future directions of global software development.

About presentations

MaPIT industrial case presentations provide insights into the real challenges and solutions global software companies have experienced, as well as enlighten the future steps for improve- ment and research on global software development and col- laboration.

About MaPIT research project

MaPIT (Management, Processes and IT Support in Globally Distributed Software Development) is a research project at Software Business and Engineering Institute (SoberIT) of the Helsinki University of Technology / Aalto University. MaPIT research project is performed by Software Process Research Group (SPRG) of Software Business and Engineering Institute. The MaPIT project is funded by Tekes and participating companies (IBM, Tekla, TietoEnator, Itella, Vaisala). Project time span is three years (2007-2009).

MaPIT research project specifically focuses on software processes, communication, IT tool support, cultural issues, group relations, trust, and governance and management of globally distributed software projects. More information about MaPIT project can be found from project web pages.
