24.11.2004 IBM myönsi TKK:n professorille 'Faculty Award' -tunnustuspalkinnon: Teknillisen korkeakoulun tietotekniikan professori Reijo Suloselle on myönnetty kansainvälisesti arvostettu IBM:n 30.000 USD:n suuruinen Faculty Award -tunnustuspalkinto. Palkinto on ensimmäinen suomalaiselle tutkijalle myönnetty tämänlaatuinen tunnustus ja se on myönnetty professori Sulosen tekemälle tutkimustyölle yritysten verkostoitumisen ja sitä tukevan tietotekniikan alueella. IBM:n Faculty Award-tunnuspalkinnot ovat erittäin kilpailtuja, ja vuosittain niitä myönnetään muutamia kymmeniä ympäri maailmaa. Palkinnoilla halutaan rohkaista tulevaisuuden kannalta tärkeiksi koettujen uusien tutkimusalojen toimintaa ja arvostusta. Niiden avulla pyritään lisäämään yhteyksiä IBM:n ja kansainvälisen tutkimusyhteisön välillä.

16.09.2004 Tekes on myöntänyt
rahoituksen uuteen tutkimusprojektiin FRISBEE
(Freeway to Internationally Competitive Software Product Businesses),
jonka parissa SoberIT:n tutkijoita on työskennellyt helmikuusta alkaen.
Projektissa tutkitaan kolmen vuoden aikana laajasti ohjelmistotuoteyritysten
kansainvälistymistä. Projektin keskeisimmät alateemat ovat näiden
yritysten strateginen johtaminen ja liiketoimintamallit, teknologia- ja kansainvälistymiskyvykkyyksien
arviointi sekä tuotteistaminen ja tuotetarjoomat.
Projektissa tehdään yhteistyötä Jyväskylän yliopiston,
Teknillisen korkeakoulun yritysstrategian laboratorion, seitsemän yrityksen,
Tekesin ja useiden ulkomaalaisyliopistojen kanssa. Vastuullisena johtajana toimii
ohjelmistotuoteliiketoiminnan professori Jyrki Kontio ja projektipäällikkönä
TkT Markus Mäkelä. Projektin yhteydessä ohjelmistoliiketoiminnan
tutkimusryhmä on myös saanut uusia voimia: SoberIT:ssä ovat elokuussa
aloittaneet työnsä Mika Ahokas ja Olli-Pekka Mutanen.

08.09.2004 Kansainvälisen liiketoiminnan Haynes-tutkimuspalkinto TKK:lle. TkT Markus Mäkelä SoberIT:stä voitti Academy of International Business –seuran Haynes-palkinnon yhdessä yritysstrategian laboratorion Markku Maulan kanssa konferenssipaperista, joka käsitteli ohjelmistoyritysten kansainvälistymistä. Haynes-palkintoa pidetään yhtenä maailman arvostetuimmista konferenssipaperipalkinnosta kansainvälisen liiketoiminnan alalla ja palkinto on alallaan huomattavimpia suomalaistutkijoiden saavuttamia huomionosoituksia. the Focus Group Method in Software Engineering: Obtaining Practitioner and User
Experiences” sai parhaan konferenssipaperin palkinnon ISESE-konferenssissa

The Software product
Health And Process Excellence (SHAPE) project of SPRG
has received funding from Tekes:
The goal of the SHAPE research project is to increase the competitivity
of the Finnish software product industry through developing an approach and
practical guidelines for supporting long-term product health and establishing
software process excellence, considering both technical and business aspects.
SHAPE is planned to span the time period 1.5.2004 – 30.4.2004, and it involves
four industrial partners: Mipro
Oy, Napa Oy, Securitas
Systems Oy, and Tekla Oyj. The total
three-year budget is 1,17M€ of which the industrial partners cover 20% and Tekes
80%. The project employs the equivalent of four full-time researchers from
SPRG.

valinnut SoberIT:n houkuteltavuuskohteeksi
Helsinki Region Marketing on pääkaupunkiseutua markkinoiva yhteistyöelin,
joka pyrkii markinoimaan pääkaupunkiseutua kansainvälisille yrityksille.
Seudun eräänä vahvuutena on hyvät korkeakoulut ja korkeakoulujen
ja teollisuuden välinen yhteistyö. Helsinki Region Marketing onkin
valinnut SoberIT:n ja ohjelmistoliiketoiminnan tutkimusryhmän esimerkiksi
johtavasta kansainvälisestä ja yhteistyökykyisestä tutkimusryhmästä.
SoberIT ja SWBiz-tutkimusryhmä siis tulevat näkymään eri

Vaikka näitä alueita tutkitaan erikseen monessa korkeakoulussa, SoberIT on eräs
harvoista paikoista Suomessa -- ja maailmassa -- jossa tämän alueen tutkimusta
ja opetusta annetaan.
03.04.2004 Pioneer of empirical SE research
received an honorary doctorate degree
One of the pioneers in empirical software engineering research, Professor
Victor R. Basili of University of Maryland, received honorary doctoral degree
from the University of Sannio, Italy. The degree was given in honor of Professor
Basili's long-term, pioneering work in promoting and advancing empirical research
in software engineering.
A special symposium was arranged in April 5 to celebrate Professor Basili's
work with the theme of "Empirical Software Engineering -- Lessons Learnt
in Twenty Years: A Baseline for Future Research".
SoberIT is one of the institutions around the world where Professor Basili's
work has had an influence and SoberIT's Professor Jyrki Kontio was one of the
invited speakers in the symposium.

Improvement conference will have a scientific track
The EuroSPI conference has been an active forum where timely experiences and
new information about process improvement has been shared between practitioners.
The next EuroSPI will be held in Trondheim, Norway on November 10-12, 2004.
The conference will now have a scientific track that will have peer-reviewed
papers that will be published in formal proceedings. SoberIT's professor Kontio
has been invited to the program committee. The deadline for submission of papers

Tutorial on "Managing Commitments and Risks: Challenges in Distributed Agile
Development" has been accepted in the ICSE

The Sixth International Workshop on Economics-Driven Software Engineering Research
(EDSER-6), co-chaired by Dr. Hakan
Erdogmus (National Research Council Canada), professor Michael
Cusumano (MIT), professor Jyrki
Kontio (SoberIT), and professor David
Raffo (Portland State University) has been accepted to be included in the
ICSE 2004 program.
The workshop is an annual event that attracts the leading researchers in hte
community to discuss and share ideas on economic and business issues related
to software. The workshop takes place on May 24 and 25 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The goal of ConSerWe is to allow cost-effective, semi-automatic or even automatic
mass-customisation and individualisation of services offered through the web.
This is achieved by developing the business concept of configurable services,
modelling and managing services as configurable service product families and
by using a service configurator to make sure that a consistent and complete
service instance is defined for each customer. ConSerWe is a 3-year joint effort
by the Product Data
Management Group (PDMG) of the Software Business and Engineering Institute,
and Configuration of Industrial
Services (CoInS) research group of TAI Research Centre.

The International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering (ISESE)
is the leading forum for empirical research in software engineering.
The 10th International Symposium on Software
Metrics is one of the main conferences in software engineering focusing
on the research and practice of software measurement, and the use of data to
understand, evaluate and model software engineering phenomena.
The XP/Agile Universe is a conference
that addresses new, flexible software development approaches.

15.10.2003: Workshop on Software Quality
models created a lively debate
A special workshop arranged in the conjunction with the EFQM forum (http://www.efqmforum2003.org/)
attracted some 90 participants to discuss how different quality models can be
used to improve software quality. In particular, the theme of the workshop was
to compare the EFQM excellence model to maturity models often used in software
organizations. The workshop was chaired by SoberIT's professor Jyrki Kontio
who commented: "the large participation and the discussion showed that organizations
are actively evaluating and considering these models and their use is not trivial".

11.06.2003: A total of 11 papers with authors from SoberIT/IERG will be presented at HCII2003, the 10th International Conference on Human - Computer Interaction conference at the end of June2003. The Conference provides an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of scientific information on theoretical, generic and applied areas of HCI. The list of papers is found [here].
10.06.2003: The COOLE
workshop received much attention and very positive participant feedback during
the ICSE 2003 conference in Portland, Oregon, recently.
The COOLE event is a cooperative learning experience that has been developed
by professor Jyrki Kontio of SoberIT and Magnus Höglund and Jan Rydén of
TietoEnator. The event uses acting, role-play, teamwork and discussion to solve
problems of a case study.
According to Jyrki Kontio, the COOLE experiences may open up new ways of interacting
and learning to be used in software engineering education. The conference newsletter

Sähkö-, elektroniikka- ja tietoteollisuuden hallitus on myöntänyt
vuoden 2002 SET palkinnon professori Turkka Keinoselle, Taideteollinen korkeakoulu
ja professori Marko Niemiselle, TKK:n Tietotekniikan osaston Ohjelmistoliiketoiminnan
ja -tuotannon laboratorio (SoberIT).
Palkittujen johtamat tutkimusryhmät ovat olleet keskenään ja
teollisuuden kanssa tiiviissä yhteistyössä tutkimusprojekteissa,
joissa on kehitetty tuotteiden käytettävyyttä ja muotoilua. Useat
projekteista ovat olleet yhteisesti toteutettuja monialaisuutta ja –tieteisyyttä
