The overall goals of the project

The goal of the project is to create a virtual language learning centre (VLC). The centre will be accessible from the Internet and will be used by language students for collaboration. The centre will closely resemble the Helsinki University of Technology, but also have purely fictional parts.

The project will implement tools to aid the collaboration of global language projects. As the students will be from several different countries, the VLC will be a central meeting point for the students. To facilitate communication, features such as whiteboards, session recorders and moderated discussion forums will be designed. The precise specifications will be a subject of the project.

The VLC will have the following key characteristics:

• Maintainability - the centre will possibly be maintained by laymen, so it should be very easy to use.
• Expandability - users and maintainers should be able to expand the centre according to their needs.
• Modularity - a basic requirement to be able to satisfy the two requirements above.
• Ease of use - the centre will be used mostly by computer novices. The basic user interface will have to be simple and intuitive.
• Security - novice users should not be able to destroy or corrupt anything. Malicious users will not be able to do damage unless granted programmer rights.

The project will deliver a tested and stable base system that fulfills the needs of the customer (HUT Language Centre). The system will later evolve, but further development is not a part of this project.
